Gourishankar Tarkavagish (1799–1859) was a renowned 19th-century Bengali journalist, scholar, and social reformer, also known as 'Gurgure Bhattacharya' for his sharp writings. In 1839, he began editing the famous weekly newspaper 'Sambad Bhaskar,' which played a fearless role in highlighting the flaws of the contemporary conservative Hindu society and the British administration. As a close associate of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, he provided strong support for the widow remarriage movement and the expansion of women's education, which was a courageous step in the conservative Brahmin society of that time. His scholarly title of 'Tarkaratna' and his keen sense of wit have made him a unique and influential figure in the history of Bengali journalism.
