J.A. Vas was a British era ICS officer and historian, who is primarily known for preparing the District Gazetteers of the then Eastern Bengal. The book 'Eastern Bengal and Assam District Gazetteers: Rangpur', published in 1910, is considered his most important work, where he presented an authentic document of the history, topography, agriculture, and social system of Rangpur. His precise observations and compilation of administrative records are still used today as an essential source book in the study of the regional history of North Bengal. Despite being a British bureaucrat, his deep interest in the local settlements and traditions has given him a place as a unique compiler of history.
