Nathaniel Brassey Halhed (1751–1830) was a renowned British Orientalist and philologist, remembered in the history of Bengali literature for composing the first scientific Bengali grammar. Published from Hooghly in 1778, his timeless work 'A Grammar of the Bengali Language' was the first Bengali grammar written in English, where he utilized movable Bengali types or printing fonts for the first time (created by Charles Wilkins). Halhed was not merely a grammarian; he introduced Oriental culture and legal systems to the Western world by compiling the Hindu legal digest 'A Code of Gentoo Laws.' This grammar book served as a landmark foundation for the development of modern Bengali prose and the printing industry, establishing him as one of the pioneers of Bengali language research.
