Nurjahan Begum (1925–2016) was a pioneer of female journalism in the subcontinent and the legendary editor of 'Begum', South Asia's first illustrated weekly magazine for women. The magazine began its journey in 1947 from Kolkata under the guidance of her father, the renowned journalist Mohammad Nasiruddin (editor of Saogat), with the primary objective of creating a platform for Muslim women to engage in literature and highlight social issues. After the partition, the magazine moved to Dhaka, and under Nurjahan Begum's skilled editorship, it served as a unique institution for over six decades in promoting women's rights, education, and creativity. In recognition of her outstanding contribution to women's empowerment, she was honored with numerous accolades, including the 'Rokeya Padak' in 1997 and the 'Ekushey Padak' in 2010.
