Richard Nixon was the 37th President of the United States, whose political career was a blend of dramatic success and intense controversy. During the Cold War, he broke a long-standing diplomatic stalemate with China to establish historical relations and initiated the policy of 'Détente' through nuclear arms control treaties with the Soviet Union. However, his role during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh was highly controversial; he and his advisor Henry Kissinger provided full support to the Pakistani military junta for strategic reasons, ignoring the humanitarian catastrophe. Ultimately, in 1974, he was forced to resign facing impeachment due to the Watergate Scandal, which remains the only instance of a presidential resignation in U.S. history.
