S. P. Chatterjee or Shiba P. Chatterjee (1903–1989) was a world-renowned Indian geographer and the pioneer of modern cartography in India. Under his leadership, the 'National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation' (NATMO) was established in 1956, which produced India’s first national atlas. He served as the head of the Department of Geography at the University of Calcutta and held the position of President of the International Geographical Union (IGU) during its congress in New Delhi in 1968. In 1959, the Government of India honored him with the 'Padma Bhushan.' His most notable and sentimental contribution was naming the state of ‘Meghalaya’; he proposed the name from the phrase meaning "abode of clouds," which was subsequently officially adopted.
