Suniti Kumar Chatterji (1890–1977) was a world-renowned Indian linguist, educator, and litterateur, often referred to as the "Emperor of Linguists" in modern India. His greatest achievement is the timeless work 'The Origin and Development of the Bengali Language' (ODBL), published in 1926, through which he established the origin, evolution, and grammatical structure of the Bengali language for the first time on the basis of scientific and comparative linguistics. He conducted original research not only on Bengali but also on the interrelationships between Indo-Aryan and Austro-Asiatic language groups, and by traveling to Java and Bali with Rabindranath Tagore, he shed significant light on the culture and art of Southeast Asia. The Government of India honored him with the 'Padma Vibhushan' in 1955, and his scholarly contributions continue to be regarded as a primary source for students of linguistics worldwide.
