In early 2007, against the backdrop of a political crisis in Bangladesh, Dr. Muhammad Yunus called for the 'Qualified Candidate Movement' (Clean Candidate Movement), which created a significant stir among the educated class and the youth of that time. His primary objective was to free politics from corruption and to make voters aware so that they would elect representatives based on honesty and merit rather than muscle power. Through this movement, he essentially aimed to build a civil society where voters would scrutinize candidate affidavits and vote for individuals with a transparent image.
Although he later initiated the formation of a political party named 'Nagorik Shakti' (Citizen Power) but subsequently withdrew, his movement brought the necessity of qualitative changes in Bangladeshi politics to the forefront in a new way.
